Red Butte Creek Oil Spill

A leak in a Chevron pipeline sent approximately 30,000 gallons of crude oil into Red Butte Creek this summer. Much of the oil has been contained, although there is concern that it could reach Great Salt Lake. Charles Uibel was at Liberty Park during the cleanup and shares his pictures of the cleanup efforts.

Lynn de Freitas, FoGSL Executive Director, was interviewed on KRCL's RadioActive program on June 14th discussing the oil spill.

Press Release: Request for Agency Action

FRIENDS, together with GSL Yacht Club, League of Women Voters of Salt Lake, League of Women Voters of Utah, Utah Airboat Association, Utah Chapter of the Sierra Club, Utah Mud Motor Association, Utah Physicians for a Healthy Environment, Utah Waterfowl Association, and Western Wildlife Conservancy filed a Request for Agency Action (RAA) on Friday, 6/11/2010, with the Executive Secretary of the Utah Water Quality Board. The RAA disputes the issuance of a discharge permit to Great Salt Lake Minerals. pdf

Perry/Willard Wastewater Treatment Plant Proposes Discharge into Great Salt Lake Mudflat Wetlands

The Perry/Willard Wastewater Treatment Plant has applied for a UPDES permit. They intend to discharge biosolids and stormwater discharge into the Great Salt Lake Mudflat Wetlands. This particular area of the lake, known as the Willard Spur, is valuable bird habitat and a rich, productive ecosystem. The proposed discharge poses an imminent threat to the Spur, as it will flush the area with nutrients from wastewater and pollutants from stormwater. FoGSL has submitted written comments.

The Great Salt Lake Minerals Corporation is proposing a massive expansion of its operations, which threatens the health and sustainability of the Great Salt Lake Ecosystem. The Coalition to Keep the Lake Great is concerned about this recent proposal and has recently launched a website to coordinate their advocacy efforts.

US Magnesium Comments on Great Salt Lake Minerals

US Magnesium recently submitted written comments to the Utah State Engineer and the Army Corps of Engineers regarding Great Salt Lake Minerals' (GSLM) request for 353,000 acre feet of water from Great Salt Lake. These comments are a part of the public record.
