Potential Effects of GSLM on the Lake's Water and Salt Balance

Kidd Waddell has prepared a review of the potential effects of the Great Salt Lake Minerals (GSLM) project on the water and salt balance of Great Salt Lake. Kidd Waddell is a retired USGS hydrologist with extensive Great Salt Lake research experience.

Selenium from Power Plants Poses Ecological Risks
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is preparing a new regulation to protect fish and wildlife from toxic metals, particularly selenium, that are released in the wastewater of coal-fired power plants. Read the article by Sarah Coefield in Environmental Health News.
 
FoGSL and FRIENDS Comment on Draft Modification of GSLM's UPDES Permit

On behalf of FoGSL, Utah Waterfowl Association, Western Wildlife Conservancy, League of Women Voters of Utah, League of Women Voters of Salt Lake, National Audubon, Bridgerland Audubon, Utah Airboat Association, the Utah Chapter of the Sierra Club, and the Utah Physicians for a Healthy Environment, comments were recently submitted to the Utah Water Quality Board concerning draft permit modifications to Great Salt Lake Minerals' (GSLM) UPDES Permit. The UPDES permit concerns discharges of the evaporation pond flushing system into Great Salt Lake.  Read the Comments from FoGSL. New 2009 USFWS Report Assesses GSL Contaminants

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently released a new report entitled "Assessment of Contaminants in the Wetlands and Open Waters of the Great Salt Lake, Utah, 1996-2000".

This report is the first-ever comprehensive evaluation of contaminant concentrations throughout the avian food chain in the Great Salt Lake and surrounding wetlands. Several geographic areas where contaminants are present at levels that approach or exceed levels of concern in avian dietary items or eggs are identified.
