On behalf of FoGSL, Utah Waterfowl Association, Western Wildlife Conservancy, League of Women Voters of Utah, League of Women Voters of Salt Lake, National Audubon, Bridgerland Audubon, Utah Airboat Association, the Utah Chapter of the Sierra Club, and the Utah Physicians for a Healthy Environment, comments were recently submitted to the Utah Water Quality Board concerning draft permit modifications to Great Salt Lake Minerals' (GSLM) UPDES Permit. The UPDES permit concerns discharges of the evaporation pond flushing system into Great Salt Lake.  Read the Comments from FoGSL. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently released a new report entitled "Assessment of Contaminants in the Wetlands and Open Waters of the Great Salt Lake, Utah, 1996-2000".

This report is the first-ever comprehensive evaluation of contaminant concentrations throughout the avian food chain in the Great Salt Lake and surrounding wetlands. Several geographic areas where contaminants are present at levels that approach or exceed levels of concern in avian dietary items or eggs are identified.
