Welcome

FRIENDS of Great Salt Lake has been educating our community and advocating for the Great Salt Lake Ecosystem since 1994. Our website contains vital research and information that will help you understand how to preserve and protect one of Utah's most unique natural resources and one of the Western Hemisphere's most important nesting, resting and staging sites for millions of migratory birds.

A Message for Boaters
The U.S. Geological Survey and the Utah Department of Natural Resources/Division of Wildlife Resources have recently placed a research buoy in the open waters of the Great Salt Lake, approximately 7 miles west of the north end of Antelope Island. Due to near-surface anchor lines, please give the buoy a wide berth (300 feet) if boating in the area.  Read the pdf.

Northwest Quadrant Master Plan Threatens Great Salt Lake

In the coming weeks, the Salt Lake City Council will likely be asked to vote on the proposed Northwest Quadrant Master Plan. This plan raises many concerns for Great Salt Lake and for Salt Lake City's growth patterns. The proposed development, located between Bangerter Highway (4000 West) and 8800 West and 2100 South to 3700 North covers 29 square miles and includes 25,000 housing units and 25 schools to support a population of over 70,000 people. This satellite development is 8 miles outside of Salt Lake City's downtown, is unconnected to other developed parts of the city, and is in close proximity to landfills containing contaminants such as arsenic. Since there is no infrastructure in place, the project would come at tremendous cost to taxpayers.

Wallace Stegner "Dead Heart of the West"
It is a desert of water in a desert of salt and mud and rock, one of the most desolate and desolately beautiful of regions. Its sunsets, seen across water that reflects like polished metal, are incredible. Its colors are of a staring, chemical purity. The senses are rubbed raw by its moonlike horizons, its mirages, its parching air, its moody and changeful atmosphere. Wallace Stegner, "Dead Heart of the West" in American Places, 1981
