Recent biogeochemical assessments of Great Salt Lake wetlands and open water have found elevated levels of methylmercury in the water and biota. David L. Naftz and David P. Krabbenhoft of USGS recently undertook a study to investigate the short-term cycling of methylmercury in water discharging from the Howard Slough State Waterfowl Management Area. The researchers found that the concentration of methylmercury decreased during daylight hours.
